Mike Tyson serves the spaghetti legs to Trevor Berbick
MIKE TYSON w rsf 2 TREVOR BERBICK
November 22, 1986; Hilton Resort, Las Vegas
TYSON entered the ring in opposition to WBC heavyweight titlist Berbick after the lengthiest layoff of his skilled profession up to now: A whopping two-and-a-half months. However he dominated from the beginning. Tyson (who would later declare in his autobiography he had ‘the clap’ on this combat) was in rip-roaring type. So dominant was he within the first spherical that British choose Harry Gibbs scored it 10-8. Within the second, with Berbick hellbent on getting the 20-year-old’s respect, Tyson scored one of the vital well-known KOs of his profession. Berbick went down thrice from one shot as commentator Barry Tompkins famously introduced, “We’ve a brand new period in boxing!”
DID YOU KNOW? Tyson’s first phrases after the combat was stopped had been to Jim Jacobs. In a tribute to his late mentor he requested, “Do you suppose Cus [D’Amato] would have appreciated that?”
WATCH OUT FOR: The beautiful finale apart, Berbick’s ludicrous method and the fury it generated from his coach, Angelo Dundee, on the finish of the primary spherical. “I made a mistake,” Berbick stated afterwards. “I attempted to show my manhood with him.”
